Getting Started

How do I get started

Shoot us an email, a text message, or a DM on social media, and we’ll get back to you about our next available start time. Generally, we take beginners every day, but we do like to know in advance when you’re coming.

What do I need for my first class?

Comfortable, preferably athletic clothes and shoes. We also recommend a water bottle. If there’s snow or rain outside, we ask that you bring a change of shoes. We try to avoid tracking outside onto our fencing floors.

What about starting gear?

We have weapons and protective gear to get you started; don’t worry about that initially. We want to make sure that you have the right equipment for your body type and fencing interests before you spend money on it. When you’re ready to buy equipment, we’ll talk you through the process after you’ve had some lessons and practice

What can I expect on my first day?

On your first day, arrive about 30 minutes early to meet the coaches, tour the facility, and take care of paperwork. You’ll then get an introduction to your class, work one-on-one with a coach on the basics, and finish with light sparring.

When do I get to spar?

Your introduction to sparring will depend on your experience level, program, and class. For example, LED Saber beginners often start sparring on their very first day, while HEMA students begin with synthetic weapons and progress to steel after their initial class. Sparring with steel requires full protective gear, which beginners may borrow from the club at no cost for their first three months.
